About This Spot

Seaview Takeaways is one of those unpretentious local spots where the salty sea breeze seems to mingle seamlessly with the scent of freshly fried fish and hand-cut chips. Nestled right by Lyall Bay’s windswept shore, this casual takeout restaurant carries the comforting rhythm of a slower pace—perfect for those seeking a simple but satisfying meal after a bracing walk along the beach or a quick stop before heading off on their day.

Step inside, and you’re greeted by a well-loved, bustling neighborhood vibe. The modest interior hums with the energy of familiar faces, some known to the owners as much more than passing customers. There’s a genuine warmth here, even if the staff sometimes wear the weight of the day on their sleeves—it’s clear that their focus is on delivering hearty, uncomplicated food that hits the spot.

The real draw is the experience of sharing in a local classic. Plates arrive stacked with thick, golden chips that are cooked just right: crunchy on the outside, fluffy inside, and perfectly paired with generous portions of fresh fish. These are meals meant to be enjoyed without fuss, ideally wrapped in paper and eaten seaside with the wind playing a part in the texture of each bite. Alongside this, the menu whispers of familiar, comforting choices—a standout chicken burger combo, warming soups with subtle home-style charm, and unique little treats like paua fritters and pork dumplings that add a surprising twist to the traditional takeout lineup.

What truly adds to Seaview Takeaways’ character is the feeling that you're sitting with a part of Wellington’s everyday life—where casual conversations, quick meals, and salty fingers combine under one roof. It’s the kind of place where locals quietly come back again and again, drawn by the dependable goodness and the sense that this spot has quietly woven itself into the fabric of the community.

Best fish & chips in Wellington city. Thick pieces of fresh fish & nice chunky chips! Ice cream by the scoop is a nice novelty as not many places do it anymore. Service needs a bit of work, staff just seem annoyed to see you there but doesn't bother me when the food is as good as it is.

The fish was so large and the chips were hand cut and chunky. Am looking forward to going back for the chicken burger and those amazing chips. Had it in the car overlooking a windy day in Welly by Lyall Bay.

Amazing fish & chips for a super low price. Definitely recommend. The fish was full of meat and texture and the batter didn't detach from the fish. One chips portion is good for 2 people and the chips are amazing too. Definitely recommend

Wow finally found a fish n chip shop that is worthy of calling a great fish n chip shop. Batter was crunchy and the fish meat inside was fat. The chips were fat and cooked to perfection. Heard about it often and never had the chance to come here and we are so glad we did. Service was fantastic.

like my review. We only stumbled upon this place after being hungry and needing the bathroom. After finding amazing public toilets, we came in and saw a huge menu. We got dumplings, cheeseburgers, and their infamous chips (fries) that is made by their place. The mother or owner seem to know a lot of customers which brings a greater value to the place. Great place for a quick bite to eat. Get the chips (fries) though since it can feed two people!
